Doing the Dew, Old School Style
A guild in World of Warcraft break up an in game funeral of some sorts
Here is what is apparently a staged abduction of Brad Pitt for the show Jackass. Sometimes, that show is pure stupidity, but this video is highly amusing
Anybody remember the movie Minority Report? Remember the touch screens that they used when looking up all of thaat information? Researchers have something like that. Check out a video of it:
This is going to be some cool stuff if/when it finally hits the market. Sure it will be very expensive, and even will take many years to come out, but there is just some awesome stuff they are making these days.
Step 1: Clean out temporary files
The first thing you will want to do is clean out the temporary files that your computer uses. Viruses will store themselves here quite a bit, so you could be getting rid of multiple viruses just by doing this. First, go to Start > Run. Then type in the box: “command.com“. Windows XP users go to Tools > Folder Options > View - then enable the option “Show hidden and system files”. Windows 98 users go to View > Folder Options. Now You need to highlight all of the files by hitting ctrl+A. Then hit shift+del. Tell it that you do want to delete all of the files. If any errors come up when deleting, just deselect that specific file, and continue deleting.
Now clean out your temporary internet files (the cache). For Internet Explorer users, open a browser, go to Tools > Internet Options. Then click on the Delete Files button, check the option that pops up, and hit OK.
Step 2: Turn off System Restore, and then turn it back on
Turning off System Restore (On Windows ME and Windows XP machines) removes any viruses or spyware that might have made backups of themselves. Turning system restore back on creates a safe restore point from when you started, just in case any removal options corrupt anything on your computer. Right click on My Computer on your desktop, then go to Properties. Click on the System Restore tab. Now check the box “Disable System Restore”. Hit Apply. Now uncheck the box “Disable System Restore”. Hit Apply, then hit OK.
Step 3: CWShredder
CoolWebSearch is a really annoying and bad piece of spyware to have on your system. Fortunately, there is a useful tool that does a good job at removing it. We are going to check your computer for CoolWebSearch now, and remove it if it exists on your computer. Go here, and then click on Download Now on the right to obtain this tool. Once you have downloaded the tool, open it up, click on the fix button, and let it scan. It will automatically remove anything it finds. If it does not find anything, then congratulations! If it does find something, it will probably ask you to restart your computer.
Step 4: Anti Virus
If you do not have an anti virus program on your computer, you need to get one immediately. Viruses are bad, and can cause you to need a reinstall of your operating system. If you have multiple anti virus programs, get rid of all but one, they can combat each other and hog your system resources. If you are going to use your own anti virus program for the scans, then make sure it is up to date on the latest definitions now. If you need an anti virus program, I suggest AVG Free Edition. It is a great program, and uses minimal system resources. Once you have downloaded your anti virus program and updated it, go ahead and start the scan. Remove or quarantine anything it finds.
Once you are finished scanning with your anti virus program, I recommend doing an online virus scan as well, just to make sure it is completely clean. A good online scanner is Trend Micro House Call. Scan for just viruses, and remove or quarantine any it finds.
Step 5: Anti Spyware
Now we are going to remove spyware from your computer. If you have a favorite anti spyware program, then you can use that, but I would suggest you scan with the following programs anyways. Adaware Personal and Spybot Search and Destroy are both very good at removing spyware. I will not go into detail on these here to save space.
Step 6: Windows Updates
Keeping your computer up to date with the latest security releases is vital to preventing viruses and spyware. Security updates are released that patch vulnerabilities and back doors that have been found in the windows software. Without these updates, you are vulnerable to all of these that have been found, and that are commonly exploited. You can easily update by opening up Internet Explorer, then going to Tools > Windows Update. The easiest way is the Express update. This will install the required security patches. Make sure to check for updates multiple times, until it tells you that there are no more. You may have to restart your computer multiple times during the update process.
Step 7: Defragment
Defragmenting your hard drive moves files that may be scattered accross random parts of the hard drive closer together, for much easier and quicker access by the computer. It is good to run a defragment about once a month. You can run defragmenter by opening My Computer, then right clicking on your C drive, go to Properties > Tools > Defragment Now.
Note about Disk Checking - Checking your hard drive for errors can result in lost data. If your computer suggests that you check your hard drive for errors, it may mean there are bad sectors on the hard drive. It is recommended that you backup all important data before running a disk check, as you may lose certain files, and in some cases, may need to completely reinstall your operating system. In some cases, your computer suggesting that you run a disk check can be a sign that your hard drive may be failing. You shouldd back up your data immediately. In fact, you should always back up your data to an external source. Hard drives can fail randomly, and losing important data can be really bad for some people.
Step 8: Firewall
I recommend ZoneAlarm for a firewall. A firewall helps prevent unauthorized access to your computer from hackers and viruses. It can also help prevent against viruses spreading. You can Download ZoneAlarm Pro Here
Still having problems?
If you are still having problems with spyware or viruses after this tutorial, then your problem may be more serious than you can handle removal of. I suggest you take your computer into a computer specialist, and have them remove any spyware and viruses you might have. These people are trained in virus and spyware removal, and will usually be able to get just about anything bad off of your computer.
