Doing the Dew, Old School Style
Russ - Posted on Tuesday, July 22nd 2008
I just finished my first major PHP website in 2+ years. It’s been forever since I’ve used PHP but I fell right back into it once I started again. It’s taken me a while to get this website done because of various other things that came up. I’ve been working a lot on it (and completely scrapped everything and remade it once). I’m very relieved that it’s finished and ready for testing by the owners.
This site has been taking a ton of my time, so now I should be able to get back into blogging and making videos. I’m trying to work on a few different ideas right now. Some church stuff, some secret project stuff, and some of my own stuff. I want to start filming a lot more now that I have the time.
I also might need to find a temp job for cash income. I’ve been doing a little computer stuff on the side, but don’t know if I have the time to completely dedicate to building that up. Plus I want to move to Colorado Springs like right now, so I need to be able to pay my way.
Still trying to think of those last couple of college classes. Gotta pick them up quick before everything runs out!

i’m not sure what php is, but congratulations! your church video in the other post with the greenscreen really inspired me… looked into it the whole day and trying to learn how to do it
PHP is a programming language that many websites are written in.
I can point you towards some greenscreening tutorials if you want. Do you have much experience making videos? Any equipment available? Do you have any editing software?
Russ, not much video experience, been learning as going along
i have the imovie and just purchased the stupendous plugin for the greenscreening, played around with a little bit looks like a lot of fun… if you know any good tutorials that would be great!
(i’ve been also getting into 3d animation, blender, although this program seems soooooooooooo impossible to learn, i cant understand a thing and i’ve been stuck on page 2 LOL).
what’s in colorado springs?
Blender is awesome. My friend Dan made the whole lake you see in the video with Blender. You can do a ton of awesome stuff with that program. A good place to get started for Blender is this: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro
As far as greenscreening the biggest thing is lighting. Light the green screen well, and independently from your subject. You don’t want shadows or inconsistencies on the green otherwise it makes it a lot harder to key. Also try to keep the material you are using as flat as possible.
You can buy actual chroma key material for a ton of money, or just head to your local fabric store / wal mart and get the material closest to the green you see here: http://www.dewknight.com/2008/04/03/make-your-own-chroma-key-wall/
I’ll look around for some good tutorials. Moving the camera during shots is tricky as you have to replicate the same movement in your artificial background. Like I said, you can also key against anything (a white wall with a dark clothed subject works). It’s really amazing some of the stuff you can do with little or no equipment.
Colorado Springs has my college, stuff to do, and work available. I live in a small town 30 minutes away from the springs right now which is.. interesting…..
Congratulation, to you, Rus.
Job finished, tested pass, and time for spend the money. Just kidding. You are PHP developer, or just for hobbies? I’am an asp.net programmer. Little in PHP, but it’s still my hobby. May be some time, I will be asp.net profesional, Now I just make a plan.
Sort of a developer. I’ve done a few major sites (city government and chamber sites) as well as a ton of my own stuff. I’m completely self taught, and of course I’m always learning.
PHP is just like riding a bike, such a great web language.
long live the dew armor!
And long will it live! Thanks!
Russ, the links are great! the wiki on blender is definitely much better than the book i have thank you for this
The chroma links too, I spent the good part of the day playing around with this using the green screen challenge video from Colbert’s site you got me started!
Awesome! I really love filmmaking and am glad to be able to help spread it to others. I’m just a novice myself, but learning more every day.
We’re actually working on a feature length film (it’s still in the way pre-development stages yet). It’s gonna feature a lot of cgi work and greenscreening. So if you’re interested in helping with that, we’ll be needing a lot of help.
It’s still a ways off though. We don’t have a script for it yet, just a ton of ideas. We’re gonna sit down and develop a script for it soon.
I agree that website projects usually take more time than allocated. Whether for your own use or for a client. You want the best, so you always want someone else to be satisfied with what you do for them
Dew Knight, I’m so such a beginner (learning everything from you!) but I’m very interested in the progress of the film (will you be blogging about it?)
Here’s is the result of my first green screen using Colbert’s McCain Challenge:

I think it came out okay for iMovie and the chroma plugin
Great work.
Yes, I’ll very likely be blogging about it extensively. Once we’re further along we’ll be setting up a website for everybody to collaborate on as well.
Im still a php newbie and still working on my website. Congrats you finished yours already.
