I’ve stumbled across a great little series on the Celtx Blog about filmmaking. Anybody who makes or is interested in making movies should check this series out. Built around Celtx media pre-production software, Motion Sketches is an online video series that explores contemporary approaches to media production development. From the big screen to the mobile screen, from live-action to the virtual camera - Motion Sketches presents a range of highly practical perspectives on developing a media project from concept to production - screenplay, design, story, development and delivery.

Watch all the episodes on Blip.tv. And if you don’t already use Celtx, get it. Celtx is free, all-in-one pre-production software used by over 250,000 media creators worldwide to write and collaborate on film and video and media of all kind.

I wrote about this a while ago but never uploaded the completed videos. We made a couple of videos for our youth group. We used a green screen to film them, and Dan helped us with making a fake lake and beach in Blender. The beach video didn’t turn out too great because of quite a few things, but the one on the lake where Jesus and Peter walk on water turned out alright.

.

You’ll have to understand that a lot of the editing and keying was done in a time period of 20 hours. I got home from a trip to Dallas and didn’t sleep until I got these finished, 20 hours later. It was an extreme night, and that’s why there are flaws and things missing that we wanted to add in.

What do you think about the video? All the people used in the video were members of the youth group. This is the first green screen thing I had done, and I really wish I had worked on it more than I did.

  • A great piece of free software for writing scripts in the standard screenplay or two-column formats is Celtx. It used to be commercial software but they have decided to make it free software.

It has a great feature to share projects between different users online, so multiple people can work on one project. You can also use their Project Central to share your scripts, receive feedback, and get the word out about something you have made.

Check out Celtx and download the latest version.

Instead of buying expensive buckets of chroma key paint you can have a hardware store mix up a bucket by giving them the correct PANTONE code for the color you want. Just give them PANTONE 2735 for a blue screen or PANTONE 354 for a green screen. You could also find similar colored fabric from Wal Mart and use that instead of actual setups.

And remember to light your wall separately from your subject, and light it well!

  • I have decided to start a new website dedicated to discussing filmmaking. I have been to a lot of different discussion forums for filmmakers and nine of them really seemed right. I have created a new one for anybody that is interested in filmmaking to use. That includes kids just looking to make a one-time project, students in film school, industry professionals wishing to share their knowledge, and people who just want to know how films are made.

Please join my new forums and post any questions you may have or information you would like to share. It’s an easy to remember website: FilmBoards.org. I’m going to work on putting all the useful information I have bookmarked, printed, written down and created over the past year. So please make sure to check out my new filmmaker forums if you are at all interested in making films.
